Hour by hour

Your Blue Cave day, minute by minute

  1. 07:00

    Meet on the Split Riva

Find the crew at the Split Sign on the waterfront. Coffee is encouraged. You will receive a wind jacket, stow your bag, and get a short safety walk-through before boarding.

  2. 07:30

    Departure — open Adriatic heading

Out of Split harbour, past Čiovo, then south-southwest into open water. About two hours of cruising with one mid-route slowdown for photos if the light is right and dolphins are spotted.

  3. 09:30

    Arrival at Biševo

We dock at Mezzoporat, where you transfer in groups of twelve onto the local wooden, electric-engine-operated boat. The queue at Mezzoporat ranges from 10 minutes to about an hour depending on the season.

  4. 10:00

    Inside the Blue Cave

About ten minutes inside the cave. The small electric boat circles slowly so everyone sees the light from the right angle. Phones out — but accept that photos rarely capture it the way your eyes do.

  5. 11:15

    Stiniva Beach — Vis

Anchored outside the narrow cliff opening; swim or paddle in through the gap. One of the most striking beaches in Europe — voted #1 in 2016 and the title still fits. About 45 minutes here.

  6. 12:15

    Budikovac Lagoon

The best snorkelling stop of the route — shallow, calm, almost tropical in clarity. Fish are habituated and curious. Snorkel gear is on board for everyone.

  7. 13:15

Hvar Old Town — lunch break

We tie up at the main harbour. Free time for lunch and a wander through the marble Pjaca.

~90 min — comfortably enough for a konoba lunch and a Pjaca walk. The crew will point you at two restaurants we trust within five minutes of the boat.

  8. 14:45

    Pakleni Islands

A short cruise out of Hvar harbour to one of the smaller bays in the Pakleni archipelago — pine meeting the water, fewer boats, fewer people. Last swim of the day.

  9. 15:30

    Heading back to Split

About two hours back. The afternoon sea on the inside of the islands is usually flatter than the morning crossing. Sundeck-side passengers tend to fall asleep around minute thirty.

  10. 17:30

    Tied up on the Riva

Total run: ten hours, five islands, roughly 110 nautical miles. Easiest dinner of your trip is the one you eat thirty minutes later in your hotel slippers.

Be ready

Packing list for the Blue Cave day

  • 1

    Swimwear under your clothes

Boat bathrooms are tight — you want to be in the water at the first stop without thinking about it.

  • 2

    High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen

Ten hours on open water cooks even resistant skin. We pass through marine reserves around Biševo and the Paklenis — reef-safe formulations help.

  • 3

A real hat + polarised sunglasses

Wide brim for shade, polarised lenses cut surface glare and let you see fish through the water at Budikovac.

  • 4

    Light long-sleeve layer

Wind chill at speedboat pace is real even on 32-degree days. Wind jackets are on board; a thin shirt underneath is more comfortable.

  • 5

    €30–€40 in cash per adult

Roughly €15–€20 for the Biševo cave ticket, €15–€20 for Hvar lunch. There is no ATM on Biševo and no card reader at the cave.

  • 6

Waterproof phone pouch or small dry bag

Spray on the open crossings is unavoidable. A €15 floating pouch saves a much more expensive replacement.

  • 7

    Motion-sickness tablets (just in case)

The Biševo crossing can be choppy. Take one an hour before departure if you have any history of seasickness, even mild.

  • 8

Water — at least 1.5 L per person

We provide cold drinks throughout the day, but a personal bottle for sipping is better than waiting for service.

  • 9

    Quick-dry towel

A microfibre or quick-dry travel towel stays manageable on a busy boat better than a hotel bath towel.

  • 10

    Water shoes (optional)

Stiniva and most Pakleni bays are pebble. Cheap rubber-soled shoes make beach entry painless.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the sea is rough or the weather changes?

Safety comes first. If conditions are not suitable, the skipper will recommend a safer route, a new date, or cancellation according to the cancellation policy.

Can children join this tour?

Yes, children can join from age 5 and up. The route uses a speedboat, so it is not recommended for pregnant guests or anyone with serious back or neck problems.

Do I need to bring food?

Cold drinks and snorkeling equipment are included, but lunch is not included. Bring snacks, water, sun protection, and some cash for lunch or entrance fees.

Where is the meeting point?

Group tours meet at the Split Sign on the Riva. The exact meeting details are sent after your booking request.

Are there extra entrance fees?

Most route stops do not require entrance fees. If an optional stop has a local fee, the crew will let you know before departure.

What should I bring on board?

Bring swimwear, towel, sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a light layer for wind, and a phone or camera. A wind jacket is provided on board.

When is the best time of day to visit the Blue Cave?

The cave's electric blue effect is strongest between roughly 09:00 and 11:30, with the peak around 10:00 to 11:00. This is why we leave Split at 07:30 sharp — the crossing takes about two hours and we want to be inside the cave during the optimal light window.

How long are we actually inside the Blue Cave?

About 10 to 15 minutes. You transfer from our speedboat into a small wooden rowboat operated by the local cave authority, who guide you in and out. The brevity is set by access rules, not by us.

How long is the lunch break in Hvar?

Approximately 90 minutes — comfortably enough for a sit-down lunch at a konoba and a walk around the Pjaca before we head back to the boat. The crew will recommend a couple of nearby restaurants that we trust to feed a hungry group quickly.

Can we book the Blue Cave tour less than 24 hours in advance?

Sometimes, especially in shoulder season (May, June, September, October). WhatsApp the crew directly with your preferred date and number of guests — we will tell you honestly whether seats remain.

What happens if the Blue Cave is closed for weather on the day?

If we cancel the tour before departure for sea conditions, you get a free reschedule to any other available date or a full refund — your choice. If we leave Split and the cave is closed at Biševo mid-route, we run an adjusted route with extra time at Stiniva and Vis and refund partially according to what we delivered.

Is the Blue Cave suitable for non-swimmers?

Yes for the cave itself — you stay seated in the rowboat the entire time. For the swim stops at Stiniva, Budikovac, and Pakleni, life jackets are available on board for anyone who prefers one.

Will we see dolphins?

Not guaranteed — they are wild. But the crossing to Biševo passes through known dolphin habitat and sightings are common, especially in May, June, and September. If a pod is spotted, the skipper will divert briefly so you can watch.

Should we book private instead of group?

For couples, solo travellers, and small groups up to four, the group tour is excellent value. For families and groups of six or more, private is often worth the upgrade — you get full route flexibility, your own departure time, and the boat to yourselves. Anyone wanting alcohol on board, doing a honeymoon, or filming with a GoPro almost always prefers private.
